Fragments

Butterwhite spoonfuls of coconut
Sweet tang grasses of Na Pali
Clickstrut crow of wild rooster
Cannonball splash of humpback
Palm tickle of popping white surf foam
Dream banks trading in Ohana.

Tawny tangles of sour spicy ahi
Delicious permiation of jasmine
Rumblethud of heavy waves against rock
Rainbows scattered from spine of turquoise tunnel
Goo coagulation of red mud 'neath shoe soles
Lava lined enclosures of Kapu.

Delicate blossoms of drenched papaya flesh
Sky clean fragrance of plumeria
Honey echoes of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Shrouded glimmer of moonstars within Kilauea night clouds
Surging crush of heavy wave upon my head
Gentle friendship of Aloha.

Creamy nut flesh of an old farmer's new macadamia
Dank rot of Tahiti Nui must
Hammond counter beat of Hawaiian reggae
Golden speckles of a motionless giant spider
Sultry lung draughts of rich Kauai air
20 reflected echoes of Mahalo.

Un Planned

Planned to wax poems
                  here on Kauai, but
                  words vanished
like rainbows flashing a breaker's curve.

Planned to still me
                  here on Kauai, but
only once, above the valley of secrets
                  and once, under the ironwood
                                  near the kapu monument
all the other hours were a constant
                                                           drizzle
                                                           unstill.

Planned to flow chi
                  here on Kauai, but
                  four star moon evening spins,
                  punctuated in cough,
                  were all I could manage.

Stupor of Samsara clings me tight
like stench envelopes a rotting corpse.
